THIN AIR by Shachar Cohen

The forms of Shachar Cohen’s brooches, rings, pendants and colliers seem familiar at first glance. But looking closer, one loses the benchmarks and the forms originality starts to take over.

Cohen creates the corpuses of his jewellery from blown and welded stainless steel sheet. He uses the very same welding machine for the decoration of the surface. This is where the masterly manipulation comes into play: the moment the tool you build the object with is utilised to decorate the same.

Back then as well as today, mankind is in need of a symbolic level to experience transcendence. Irrespective of religion or ideology the ability to believe is what secures humans. It is the expression of seeking something that would echo our longings, desires, and hopes.

Cohen graduate from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, Israel (BFA 2010) and holds a graduate degree from the class of jewellery and hollower at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich (Diplom 2018). Cohen is the recipient of several awards and honours and his works have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions. Currently live in Tel- Aviv and from 2018 he is a faculty member at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem in the department of Jewellery and Fashion.
